Jimmy Carter Overview

Former President Jimmy Carter leaves after the funeral of former First Lady Rosalyn Carter at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains, Georgia on November 29, 2023. Carter’s great grandson gave an update on the former president’s health

Former President Jimmy Carter has seen no change in his condition since entering hospice care nearly 18 months ago, according to his grandson.

Jason Carter, the former president’s eldest grandson, said in an interview with Southern Living magazine that the 99-year-old was “experiencing the world as much as he could” after the death of his wife, Rosalyn, last November.

Carter, the 39th president of the United States who served between 1977 and 1981, entered hospice care at his home in Plains, Georgia in February 2023, after multiple hospital stays. Jimmy Carter has also experienced several health issues over the years, including recovery from lung and brain cancer.
Jason Carter’s latest health update comes after the former president said in a speech in Atlanta in May that he was “finally coming.”

Speaking to Southern Living, Jason Carter said the family thought the former president might have a short life once he entered hospice care, but now it appears “God had other plans.”

Discussing how Carter is coping as a widower, Jason Carter said: “After 77 years of marriage[…]I don’t think any of us really understand what it’s like for her right now. We have to accept the fact that, That there is something about the soul that you cannot understand.”

The former president’s grandson also described how his grandfather discussed his health and how he was feeling during a recent visit to Plains.

“I told my dad, ‘When people ask me about you, I have to say that I honestly don’t know,'” Jason Carter shared. “He laughed and responded, ‘I don’t even know myself.'”

“It was pretty sweet,” he added.

Speaking at a mental health forum at Atlanta’s Carter Center in May, Jason Carter said: “My grandpa is fine. He’s been in hospice for about a year and a half now.

“And he’s really, I think, coming to the end. As I said before, there’s a part of that faith journey that’s very important to him. And there’s a part of that faith journey that you can only be here at the very end, and I think He is in that place.”McDonald’s All-American Game in 2024

The Carter Center, a nonprofit founded by the former president and former first lady in 1982, confirmed last February that the Democrat would enter hospice care at her home instead of additional medical interventions.

The center issued a statement expressing full support for him from both his family and medical team. They also requested privacy for the Carter family, thanking his numerous fans for their concern.

Carter, who lost the 1980 election to Ronald Reagan, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his “tireless efforts to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, advance democracy and human rights, and promote economic and social development.”
