Paris Olympics: Indian wrestlers’ list gets longer, country’s dream of improving medal performance undone again
India’s attempt to win an unprecedented seventh medal in the Paris Olympics has been cut-short. The wrestler Ritika Hooda has been elimated from the tournament. Thus, the dreams of the Indian women’s wrestling team were cut short when Kyrgyzstan’s Iperi Medet Kizi was knocked out of the competition in the preliminary stage of the tournament.

Oh for the joys of coulda, woulda, shoulda, had Iperi reached the final, Ritika would have had a chance to enter the repechage round. Nevertheless, she was defeated and her dream of getting another medal was sunk. Earlier, Ritika was defeated to Kyrgyzstan’s Iperi Medet Kizi in the quarter final. According to wrestling rules had Iperi proceeded to the final, Ritika was given a chance to wrestle for the bronze medal in what is known as the repechage round.(Paris Olympics )
Though the Indian wrestlers were knocked out in the last eight, there was still something to cheer about in the competition. However, this, it seems is now done and dusted, with the dream of upping India’s medal tally gone with it.
The last Olympics had seen India clinching as many as seven medals. This time there is one medal less First, let me introduce one unmistakable fact: This is not a rout. The country has no means of clinching another medal on last day in Paris. If Vinesh Phogat gets a joint silver medal then India can have the tally of the last year’s medals. This time a total of six medals have been secured out of which one is silver and five are bronze. Most of the six Indian athletes ended fourth; otherwise, the total tally could have been more than a dozen this time.(Paris Olympic )
