President Draupadi Murmu launched the Durand Cup 2024 on Wednesday
President Draupadi Murmu launched the Durand Cup 2024 on Wednesday. This time, he unveiled the trophy of the tournament at a function organized at Rashtrapati Bhavan. These include the Durand Cup, the President’s Cup and the Shimla Trophy. It will start from July 27. Its matches will be held in four cities – Kolkata, Kokrajhar in Assam, Shillong in Meghalaya and Jamshedpur in Jharkhand.

The President talked about the rise of Indian football
President Murmu said, “Football is the most popular sport in the world. Professional football players entertain people. Currently Euro 2024 is going on and it is being watched all over the world, it is in the news everywhere. Stakeholders across the country should work together to improve sports in India.”

The President recalled the contribution of the Durand Cup, named after its founder Sir Henry Mortimer Durand, to the country’s football heritage. Sir Henry was the Foreign Secretary of India from 1884 to 1894.
The President recalled the history of the tournament
“This is the oldest football tournament in India and it is more than 135 years old,” the President said about the tournament which was first held in Shimla in 1888. Rajendra Prasad, the first President of India presented the President’s Cup to the Durand Cup. Awarded to winners in 1950.”

Eight teams – the group’s top team and the two best second-placed teams – will qualify for the knockout stages. Army teams from Bangladesh and Bhutan are also participating in the upcoming tournament. The final will be held at the Vivekananda Yuva Bharati Sports Complex in Kolkata.

After the event, President Murmu was seen playing badminton with top badminton player Saina Nehwal at the badminton court of Rashtrapati Bhavan in Delhi. This information was informed by Rashtrapati Bhavan
