During a military parade exercise, the tragedy occurred when two Malaysian Navy copters flying in formation collided in mid-air. The collision resulted in the loss of 10 crew members on board. Video footage from local media showed one aircraft clipping the rotors of the other before the two helicopters crashed to the ground. The incident occurred at 09:30 local time (02:30 BST) in Lumu, Malaysia, where a Royal Malaysian Navy base is located. Sadly, no one survived the accident.
“Upon arrival, all victims were confirmed dead, and their remains were transferred to Lumut Military Hospital for identification,” the Royal Malaysian Navy said. The Navy has also announced the formation of a committee to investigate the cause of the incident. According to reports, a helicopter, a HOM M503-3 carrying seven people, is suspected to have crashed on a moving track. Another helicopter, a Fennec M502-6 with three passengers, crashed into a nearby swimming pool.
The state Fire and Rescue Department received notification of the incident at 09:50 local time (01:50 GMT). Malaysia’s Prime Minister, Anwar Ibrahim, mourned the tragedy in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, saying, “The nation is saddened by the heart-wrenching and soul-wrenching tragedy.
