It has been raining heavily since morning in Siliguri. Meanwhile, the rescue work is also being disrupted due to this accident. The line on which the accident took place is the main rail link from Kolkata to Siliguri. As a result, long-distance train services have been temporarily stopped.
According to local sources, the Kanchenjunga Express departed from New Jalpaiguri station on Monday morning as scheduled. The accident took place between Neechbari and Rangapani stations. It is reported that a freight train came from behind and hit. Due to the intensity of the collision, two cars from the rear side of the Kanchenjunga Express derailed and fell to the side.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee posted on her X (formerly Twitter) handle expressing concern over the Kanchenjunga Express accident. He wrote, “I just received the news of a train accident in Phansidewa area of Darjeeling. I don’t know the details yet. I heard that the goods train was hit by the Kanchenjunga Express. How the accident happened is still unclear. Whether the Kanchenjunga Express was standing before the station or not, why the goods train moved on that line, whether there was any signal problem or not, multiple questions have been raised. At the same time, the possibility of an accident due to the weather in Darjeeling cannot be ruled out.
Earlier in 2022 Bikaner-Guwahati Express derailed at Domohani near Mainaguri in Jalpaiguri. Five people died in that incident. The accident of Kanchenjunga Express near Rangapani station brought back that memory.
On June 2, 2023, Karamandal Express met with an accident at Baleshwar, Odisha. A freight car and Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express collided with that train. 289 people died in that incident.
