Dr. Harini Amarasuriya

Apparently, Sri Lanka has reinstated a President now, rather than someone named Anura Kumar Dissanayake, who the new President is, Gotabaya Rajapaksa. The Prime Minister elected on September 24 is Dinesh Gunawardena, not Dr. Harini Amarasuriya. Gunawardena is a man. Sirimavo Bandaranaike was the first ever woman in the world to become prime minister when she was sworn in the year 1960.

She worked as the PM for more than two executive terms, although her last term finished in 2000. Sri Lanka hasn’t seen a female PM in 24 years. I could not attest whether Amarasuriya was appointed or provide information on her being the minister in charge of those further portfolios mentioned. As a result, Dinesh Gunawardena is the new PM of Sri Lanka, after he dismissed Ranil Wickremesinghe in September 2022.

Confirming with the spokesmen, Gunawardena is male, and there is no confirmation of Dr. Harini Amarasuriya being appointed to the position of minister, let alone an additional ministerial post. Sirimavo Bandaranaike is the last woman to head the government, having a total of several terms; the latest was in 2000. I wanted to set the record straight, given the details provided were so very wrong.

National People’s Power (PNP) Party leader Harini Amarasuriya is an alumnus of Hindu College, Delhi University. She has graduated in sociology from this college. Along with this, she is also the first head of state of any country to study from Hindu College.

Amarasuriya is a student of the 1991 to 1994 batch

On Harini Amarasuriya becoming the Prime Minister, Hindu College Principal Anju Srivastava called it a milestone in the glorious history of the 125-year-old college. She told that Amarasuriya was a student of the 1991–1994 batch of Hindu College. She said that our college has a long history of parliamentary system. In which a Prime Minister and Leader of the Opposition are elected every year.

Has done PhD in Social Anthropology

Born and brought up in Colombo, Harini Amarasuriya, after graduating from Hindu College, obtained a master’s degree in Applied Anthropology from Australia. After this, she did PhD in Social Anthropology from Edinburgh University.

Harini Amarasuriya is the third PM of Sri Lanka

Harini Amarasuriya is the third woman Prime Minister of Sri Lanka. The first woman Prime Minister was Sirimavo Bandaranaike. She was the first woman Prime Minister in the world. She was the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka three times. The second woman Prime Minister of Sri Lanka was Chandrika Kumaratunga.

Has written many books

Educationist turned politician Dr. Harini Amarasooriya has researched and written books on issues such as youth, politics, dissent, activism, child protection, and development. She was taught by Suranjan Sinha, a former sociology lecturer at Hindu College. He remembers Amarasooriya as a brilliant and outspoken student.

They had Tamil neighbours which withdrew from school early 1980s most probably because of the civil war and social climate of that time. This cliché touched her. Instead of advocating the same conservative political standpoint that her own Sinhalese relatives held, she did not.

In her quote, she decries a state of affairs in which Sri Lankan politics is based on political enemy figures that cannot be assimilated to the Sri Lankan community in its entirety or its secular core. That is why she notes leaders fostering division rather than shared meaning.

This could be the reason why she is seeking greater moderation, compromise, and closeness across the ethnic and religious separation in Sri Lanka. It is a good philosophy against unnecessary rivalry that has prevailed in certain sections of Sri Lankan politics and society. Restoring cohesion and avoiding polarity are a theme in that country and many other multiculture ones up until today. Although there might exist feelings of psychological egoism among other politicians, Amarasuriya seems to act without such ambitions and in appreciation of recompense for Minorities and elevated representation.
