Early and personal life
Farhan Akhtar was born in Mumbai, hence making him of the second generation since his parents are screenwriters, Javed Akhtar and Honey Irani. He has one elder sister the writer director Zoya Akhtar. He was very young when his parent’s divorce; his father remarried the actress Shabana Azmi in the year 1984.

His mother lived in the same house at Bandra Bandstand and raised her children in that house. Akhtar attend Maneckji Cooper School in Mumbai and further he completed his law course in HR College in Mumbai. Akhtar’s father originally hails from Pakistan and is culturally and by birth a Muslim although he has described himself as a socialist and an atheist; Akhtar’s mother is also a woman of Indian Irani Zoroastrian origin who was not particularly interested in religion and was quite happy to raise her children in a secular form, without imposing any religious beliefs on them. Akhtar has averred that he does not believe in the existence of God and therefore he is an atheist.

The family of Akhtar comes from Khairabad in the Avadh region of today’s Uttar Pradesh and he belonged to the blessed progeny of Urdu poets. He is son of the famous lyricist and poet Jan Nisar Akhtar and great son of the poet Muztar Khairabadi. From his mother’s side, his cousins include Daisy Irani who was a child actress and the first cousins Farah Khan who is a choreographer and Sajid Khan a comedian.
