Bridgerton Recap: A Lost Cause
The new season of Bridgerton, featuring the long-awaited romance between fan-favorite spinster gossip columnist Penelope Fetherington (played by Nicola Coughlan) and her longtime crush Colin Bridgerton (played by Luke Newton), retains the same delightful essence as its predecessors. The characters are charming as ever, the costumes are exquisite, and the setting is a lovely rendition of Regency-era London, with lush greenery and impeccably manicured landscapes.
Bridgerton’s signature style of presenting a gritty and somewhat fantastical version of history continues to captivate audiences. While the show’s various casting choices have sparked controversy, the seamless inclusion of different ethnicities in elite society adds to the series’ unique and charming atmosphere. Other productions, such as Apple TV+’s The Buccaneers, have tried to emulate Bridgerton’s light-hearted and visually stunning approach with varying degrees of success.
In this critique, the author expressed their weariness with both Julia Quinn’s novels and their television adaptations with the Bridgerton series’ repetitive setting and limited focus on nobility. They argue that the relentless depiction of luxurious ballrooms and wealthy characters lacks depth and fails to explore the lives of people outside elite circles.
The author notes that although there are occasional references to impending financial problems for non-aristocratic characters such as Kate Sharma and the Featheringtons, these concerns never truly threaten the central Bridgerton family. Furthermore, they criticize the transformation of working-class characters such as the Mondrichs into members of the aristocracy, lamenting the loss of diversity in the narrative.
The piece contrasts the series with novels such as Joe Baker’s “Longbourn,” which offer a different perspective focusing on the lives of servants rather than wealthy aristocrats. In “Longbourn” the fatigue and struggle of the working class become an integral part of the story, providing a more nuanced portrayal of historical romance.
Ultimately, the author argues for more variety and depth in historical romance narratives, arguing for stories that explore different social classes and perspectives beyond the elite.
