In its 133rd edition, the Durand Cup is India’s oldest football tournament. The matches will be held in these four cities – Kolkata, Kokrajhar, Jamshedpur and Shillong.
The Durand Cup 2024 football tournament is set to begin on July 27, with the final to be held on August 31 at the Vivekananda Yuva Bharati Krirangan (Salt Lake Stadium) in Kolkata.
First held in 1888, the Durand Cup is India’s oldest football tournament and marks the start of the Indian domestic season. The upcoming edition will be the 133rd iteration of this historic competition.
The Durand Cup features Indian Super League, I-League and Armed Forces teams. Over the years, international teams have also participated. The 2024 edition will include a total of 43 matches, which will be played in a round-robin league-cum-knockout format.
A total of 24 teams will compete, divided into six groups of four teams each. The six group winners and the best two second-placed teams will advance to the knockout stages.
For the 133rd edition, Jamshedpur and Shillong have been added as host cities, further expanding the reach of the tournament to the eastern and northeastern regions of India. Kokrajhar, Shillong and Jamshedpur will host one group each, while the remaining three group matches will be played in Kolkata.
Reigning champions Mohun Bagan Super Giants, with 17 titles, are the most successful team in the competition, followed by arch-rivals East Bengal, who have won 16 trophies. Last season, Mohun Bagan defeated East Bengal in the final, a historic Kolkata derby
The 2016 champions, Army Green, were the last Armed Forces team to win the title. Gokulam Kerala, in 2019, was the last I-League club to lift the Cup trophy.
