Ratan Tata is one of the biggest industrialists of the nation and of the world and he passed away in hospital in Mumbai. He was taken to the hospital in the past few days. Ratan Tata has successfully created a massive legacy as far as Tata Group’s success is concerned. To a certain extent, the current gross on estimation is around 165 billion of US dollars by the Tata group. After the ownership was transferred from Ratan Tata, they talked about who would take his legacy forward. Let’s find out who will look after it after Ratan Tata.
What trusts was Ratan Tata involved in?
Much as many people would wish for Ratan Tata to have made his successor, he did not. Thus a chairman will be elected out of the trust his trustees shall possess. Although the Tata Group has two primary charitable trusts, to be precise, charitable trusts for the Tata Group are Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and Sir Ratan Tata Trust. Combined, their two trusts own 52 percent of the Tata Sons Company, which is the flagship company of the Tata Group of Companies. Tata Sons looks after the Tata Group of companies.
The group deals with aviation and FMCC portfolios. The two trusts have 13 trustees in total. These people are trustees in both the expressed and implied trusts. These include the former defense secretary Vijay Singh, auto industry pioneer Venu Srinivasan, Noel Tata, the half-brother of Ratan Tata and the chairman of Trent, and the Nagpur-based businessman Mehli Mistry and an advocate, Darius Khambatta.
Others involved in these trusts include former City India CEO Parmeet Jhaveri Sir Dorabji Tata Trust, Ratan Tata’s younger brother Jimmy Tata, and Jahangir Hospital CEO Jahangir HC Jahangir.

How are the chairmen of these trusts selected?
Being a charitable trust, the head of the Tata Trust is elected by the majority of the trustees. Both these trusts are headed by vice- chairman Vijay Singh and Venu Srinivas. But the chances of one of them being selected as the head are comparatively less. The current favourite to take the top job at Tata Trusts is 67-year-young Noel Tata. The Parsi community will also be pleased with Noel’s appointment.
Ratan Tata was Parsi.
This will also ensure that a Parsi is heading this organization since they initially funded it. This trust had contributed more than 470 crore rupees in the financial year 2023. Only Parsis seized the command of Tata Trust and this preference is also a historic reality.
But some of them did not bear Tata in their names and were not directly connected with the trust braking the line of the founding family. Should Noel Tata go to the poll and wins, he will chair the two Trusts, namely the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust, where he will be the 11th chairman and the Sir Ratan Tata Trust, where he will be the 6th chairman. Noel has been with the Tata Group since more than 40 years.
He is a director on the boards of six large corporations: Trent, Titan, Tata Steel and others. He was made a trustee of Sir Ratan Tata Trust in 2019. He currently serves on the board of Sir Dorabji Tata Trust since 2022. While Tata’s term came to an end, people were expecting that he will switch over to the Chairman of Tata Sons.
But the chairman of the board at that time was Noel’s brother-in-law, Cyrus Mistry. About the time that Cyrus Mistry was removed from Tata Sons, N Chandrasekaran, the CEO of TCS, was appointed as the chairman of Tata Sons. Noel and Ratan Tata were never in the same frame. Both continued having a personal space between them
