Investigators believe a man and his wife were speeding in a Bentley on the Rainbow Bridge, which connects the US and Canada, Wednesday morning. According to sources, the speeding vehicle hit a guardrail first, sending the vehicle airborne into the secondary screening area

Investigators believe the man, who lives in New York, had planned to attend a KISS concert in Canada, but when it was canceled he went to a casino in the United States. Citing sources, CNN reported that the accident occurred after the couple left the casino.A law enforcement source involved in the investigation said the vehicle entered the bridge area on the U.S. side. According to earlier reports, the vehicle was traveling from Canada to the United States.

New York Gov. Cathy Hochul said the explosion on the eve of the US Thanksgiving holiday, a busy travel day and causing closures and delays at the start, was feared to be a terrorist attack, but the incident did not appear to be terrorism-related.

Eyewitnesses say that the car was flying in the sky as if watching a movie.

Rickie Wilson told CNN affiliate WKBW seeing the car flying past him was “almost like a movie” and for a moment, he thought it was a plane. He said the car rotated a little as it returned to the ground and then hit something when it landed.

A photo of the crash scene shows little left of the car, which Hochul said “disintegrated” – except the engine.

The governor said Wednesday evening that two people died in the vehicle after uncertainty from law enforcement sources due to the intensity of the fire. Hochul said a border patrol worker in a booth was also slightly injured.

Hochul said the vehicle belonged to a resident of Western New York. Four bridges between Canada and the United States were closed immediately after the incident, officials said. The Peace, Whirlpool and Lewiston-Queenston bridges reopened Wednesday. Buffalo Niagara International Airport said passengers should expect additional screening after the crash.

Leaders of both the United States and Canada were informed of the situation as the initial investigation progressed.
