At least 60 people were killed and 145 others wounded when gunmen dressed in camouflage opened fire on concertgoers near Moscow with automatic weapons on Friday. The tragic incident marked one of the deadliest attacks in Russia in years. Islamic State, a militant group that previously aimed to gain control over parts of Iraq and Syria, claimed responsibility for the attack via its Telegram channel.

According to a statement from a US official on Friday, the US has intelligence indicating that Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the shooting. The official also noted that Washington had approached Moscow in recent weeks about the possibility of such an attack.

Several armed assailants opened fire on frightened civilians inside Crocus City Hall just moments before Soviet-era rock band “Piknik” was scheduled to entertain an audience at a 6,200-seat theater in a suburb west of Moscow.

Russian media outlets said a second explosion occurred at the venue, with reports indicating that some of the gunmen had barricaded themselves inside the building. Tragically, children were among those killed and injured during the concert. Numerous ambulances were dispatched to Moscow’s Sklifosovsky Emergency Care Institute to respond to the incident.

The witness, who spoke to Reuters on condition of anonymity, described a chaotic scene in which shots rang out behind them, causing panic and confusion. They described how there was a burst of gunfire, stampede into the crowd. In the chaos, everyone starts running towards the escalators, screams fill the air as people flee in fear. The narrative paints a vivid picture of the terror and chaos that unfolds in moments of crisis.

The shooting began days after President Vladimir Putin was re-elected for a new six-year term and as Russia is prosecuting a war with Ukraine.

According to Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB), 40 people were killed and more than 100 were injured, state news agency TASS reported. The FSB also said it was implementing all necessary measures in response to the situation.

Islamic State militants claimed responsibility for an attack on the outskirts of Moscow in a post on Telegram. The statement emphasized that their fighters suffered significant casualties, causing extensive damage in the area before retreating to their bases unharmed.
