Team USA has set its sights on the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup. Most of chatter since the roster release has been negative given that some of the stars like Devin Booker, Kevin Durant, Paul George were not in the team.

Criticism rared its ugly head after Team USA got trounced by the USA Select Team on Saturday, a team composed mostly of second-string NBA talents.

Anthony Edwards already has one All-Star selection under his belt at age 22 and is widely regarded as one of the best young players in the league. He was expected to start for Team USA after the roster was announced, though it appears he had to wait for his chance. (Anthony Edwards)

NBA History

The NBA traces its roots to the Basketball Association of America which was founded in 1946 by the owners of major ice hockey fields in the Northeastern and Midwestern United States and Canada. On November 1, 1946, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, the Toronto Huskies hosted the New York Knickerbockers at Maple Leaf Gardens, in a game the NBA now refers to as the first game played in NBA history. The first basket was made by Ossie Schekman of Knickerbockers.

In its early years, the standard of play in the BAA was not significantly better than that of competing leagues or leading independent clubs such as the Harlem Globetrotters. For example, the 1947 ABL finalist Baltimore Bullets moved to the BAA and won that league’s 1948 title, and the 1948 NBL champion Minneapolis Lakers won the 1949 BAA title.

Prior to the 1948-49 season, the BAA lured the Fort Wayne Pistons, Indianapolis Kautskys, Minneapolis Lakers, and Rochester Royals from the NBL to play at larger venues such as Boston Garden and Madison Square Garden. The NBL outbid the BAA for the services of several players, including Al Cervi, rookie Dolph Schayes and five-star running back from the University of Kentucky, and with the creation of the Indianapolis Olympians,

the Kautskys folded while finishing on top in Indianapolis. With several teams experiencing financial difficulties, the BAA and NBL agreed to merge on August 3, 1949, to form the National Basketball Association. Maurice Podoloff, president of the BAA, became president of the NBA, and Ike Duffey, president of the NBL, became chairman. The NBA later adopted the history and statistics of the BAA as its own, but the NBL did not do the same for records and statistics.
